Isezaki Koichiro Black Bizen Guinomi Sake Cup: $495.00
Isezaki Koichiro is a rising star in the world of Bizen pottery. Son of Living National Treasure Isezaki Jun, he has come into his own with signature forms and firing. He apprenticed with Jeff Shapiro in NYC, then returned to Bizen to forge his own fusion of tradition and innovation. He won the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 2022, one of the highest honors for a contemporary potter in Japan. This hefty guinomi is one of his trademark forms. It looks like meteorite that just happens to hold a generous volume of sake. The black (kuro) glaze is a style that I believe was developed by his father Isezaki Jun. There are a few places where the black has turned a dark blue. The piece has a bounty of goma (sesame) coating the interior and dripping down one side, formed when ash from the burning wood in the kiln happens to land upon the piece. This reflects both strategic placement in the kiln and the luck of the kiln gods. Koichiro\'s work has been exhibited around the world and frequently sells out at exhibitions. I see this style and form only rarely, and I love the earthy organic nature. In perfect condition with signed box, paper with his exhibition history and cloth.
