Ireland/U.S.: FenianBrotherhood Wolfe Tone Centenary Cross 1798-1898. Rare bronze cross featuringthe profile of Irish patriot, Wolfe Tone, who was hanged by the British in 1798after participation in a failed rebellion. This is almost certainly one ofseveral medals issued by Fenians or other Irish republicans in 1898 tocommemorate the 100th anniversary of the martyrdom of Wolfe Tone. Thereverse of the cross is plain, except for the center, which has the crossedU.S. and Fenian flags. It was most likely produced in the United States by theFenian Brotherhood, which was founded in the U.S. in 1858, and was dedicated to theindependence of Ireland from Great Britain. The American Fenians twice, in 1866and 1870, formed a small army that invaded Canada in a far-fetched plan to pressureBritain into granting Ireland’s independence. This is only the second Wolfe Tonecross encountered in decades. The precise circumstances of its manufacture anddistribution are unknown.
