This item isan original 1700s (circa 1700-1756) vintage early English Indian Peace Medal.The metal is probably pure silver.This medal was most like made inEngland/Great Britain. On obverse thereis a depiction of an important Native American chief.On the reverse there is a depiction ofEuro-American settlers in Euro-American clothing kneeling with the nearestindividual holding a flag pole (the flag is planted in the ground).There’s a metal suspension at the topattached to the medal for the wearer to use a ribbon/rope to wear the medalaround the neck.Can’t make out all ofthe words inscribed on the medal.Oneword appears to be “Free” and a number appears to state: “400.”This item appears to be exceedingly rare andvaluable.A 1757 Indian Peace Medal soldat sale for $168,000 and this appears to predate that by decades.
Thedimensions are: 1 and 3/8 inch (for both top to bottom and left to right), andthe height of the medal is 3/32nd of an inch.
I purchasedthis medal from an expert Native Americanitem collector who was also a dealer who sold Native American items; in addition he had a large collection of other early American history items and was an expert on collecting those items as well.The seller wrote books onNativeAmericans so was an expert on Native Americans.Theexpert collector/dealer/author noted on item description for this item that this is an original 1700s early English Indian Peace Medal.
