Chickasaw involving the Mentioning the Monitor \"Winnebago\" , two Injured crew members, firing shells on the enemy an encounters with the Reb\'s and how they scatter once they see the Monitor coming as well as Smuggling Uniforms and other Contraband.

The letter reads in full:

\"USS \"Chickasaw..
Miss River
July 1st 1864

Billy,

There are ten of us sitting around the table and all sorts of arguments are under-weigh. This life is a little to dull, hardly enough exercises to keep the itch of a fellow. I have a boy is my own clerk and you bet I don\'t take any unnecessary steps, it is about all they are fit for. There are at present on board of here twenty en has one officers. Our Paymaster has gone to the Memphis Hospital he was taken very sick in consequences of his wounds,I am very thankful that it was not me.
Mr. Morrisey that light mustache fellow that you saw on-board the \"Savannah\" is on the \"Winnebago\" same class of vessel as this lovely craft, he is very sick also and has hell away to a skeleton.
Next week the \"Winnebago\" is to relieve us and we are to have quarters put on our decks for the accommodation of the officers and then we are to go down to Morgan\'s Bend and lay all the summer. Without there is hard fighting out here the same as on the River East, our services will be but little required other ways than to guard some particular point on the River for the moment a Monitor makes it\'s appearance the Rebs scatter. Last night we threw a fifteen second shell on top of the hill at a light that was seen there, all hands we called to quarters and some of them were looking two was for Sunday.
I am on duty six hours in twenty four and all the rest of the time is my own without - There us exercise in the boats, once a week we have four boats armed, and exercise skirmishing along the banks.
Tell Pat I pulled last and Crabs caught to speak off.
It is getting very warm and right between the heat of the sun and heat if the decks but the nights are quite comfortable. Mosquito\'s are not so troublesome as might be expected. Last Tuesday two intelligent contraband\'s hailed us from the banks they had traveled two hundred miles from Shreveport, we shipped them and they put on Uncle Samuel\'s uniform for two years.
Our principal amusement is bathing as you are aware how these boats in tow and are the model artists arrange themselves along in line with buckets and give it to each other. Suppose it is about time for your vacation go in with that Leotch(?) suit and have a good time down for a week. Write us all about it - every word. Remember me to Joe and abandon or what ever his man is.\\
                                                                            Louis \"
