Hotel Jefferson - St. Louis - Early 1920\'s - Hotel Silver Butter Pat

Here is a very rare and extremely hard to find early 1920\'s era top logo and bottom marked 3.25\" wide silver butter pat made for the Hotel Jefferson in St. Louis, Missouri. This butter pat would have been used in the hotel’s restaurant, café, dining rooms, Gold Room, or even for room service. It was made to have been used in connection with the Jefferson Hotel china and glassware for table service.

It was made by the R. Wallace Silver Co. has the catalog number of 0721 and has the hotel\'s intricate monogram on the front with \"St. Louis\" under it. It is the heavyweight type Steamship, Lunch Counter, and Railroad silverplate.

It has the usual light usage scratches, spots, and sine discoloration in one corner, but overall, looks wonderful.

Historically, the Hotel Jefferson was a beautiful 13-story hotel located in downtown St. Louis at 12thand Locust Streets that was built in 1904.When built, the hotel was advertised as being the largest hotel in St. Louis, next to the Planters Hotel. The hotel opened just in time to assist in handling the large crowds of people that traveled to St. Louis for the 1904 World’s Fair – Louisiana Purchase Exposition.

By 1929, the hotel had undergone renovations and was also being advertised as the “New Hotel Jefferson”.The new additions increased the hotel size by another 400 rooms, which again the Jefferson advertised as being St. Louis’s largest hotel. The hotel’s management advertised itself as “The Aristocrat of St. Louis”.Many famous persons made the hotel their place for accommodations while visiting St. Louis. This list included President Harry S. Truman, Mary Pickford, Arthur Rubinstein, John L. Lewis, and Enrico Caruso.

Located in the heart of the downtown entertainment district, The Jefferson was a location where many of theatergoers would attend “after-performance” dinners and gatherings.Of the hotel’s many famous banquet rooms over the years, the Gold Room was the one that hosted many important events and conventions.

During the era that this butter pat was made and used, persons arriving in St. Louis to stay at the hotel were primarily still arriving by passenger train via way of the large Union Station.Travelers would have arrived by either the Baltimore & Ohio, The Alton Route, Wabash, Chicago Rock Island & Pacific, Chicago & Eastern Illinois, Missouri Kansas & Texas, Chicago Burlington & Quincy – Burlington Route, Missouri Pacific, Louisville & Nashville, Pennsylvania, St. Louis & South Western – Cotton Belt, Southern Railway, Mobile & Ohio, Illinois Central, Cleveland Cincinnati Chicago & St. Louis – Big Four – New York Central, or the St. Louis & San Francesco – Frisco Railroads.

In the 1950’s, the hotel was part of the Hilton Hotel Co. and then became a Sheraton Hotel. In 1969, the once grand hotel was closed and converted into the Jefferson Arms Apartments building. It was also placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2006, the once former grand hotel was purchased and underwent a major renovation.Today, the building still remains for apartments.
