Offered here is a remarkable archival group of 10 original black-and-white photographs dating to Easter 1973, believed to document Easter observances at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York, one of the historically important centers of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR).
The photographs come directly from the Nicholas A. Petroff Archive and have remained together with their original aged paper storage envelope.
The envelope is handwritten:
“PICTURES / MONASTERY / Easter 1973”
Each of the 10 photographs is stamped on the reverse “ORIGINAL PHOTO BY Richard Rowell,” identifying the photographer and providing important evidence that these are period photographic prints rather than later reproductions.
The photographs document Russian Orthodox religious life in considerable detail. Scenes include clergy in elaborate liturgical vestments, hierarchical religious services, congregants, richly decorated church interiors, icons and iconostasis, Orthodox domes and crosses, liturgical objects and a cemetery filled with traditional Orthodox crosses.

Based upon the handwritten “Monastery / Easter 1973” envelope, Russian Orthodox subject matter, architecture, church interior, cemetery, clergy, and the context of the Nicholas Petroff Archive, these photographs are believed to have been taken at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York.
The individual photographs, however, are not captioned with the location. Therefore, the Jordanville identification is presented as an informed attribution rather than as definitively documented fact.
Holy Trinity Monastery was an important center of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. The date of these photographs is particularly interesting because Archbishop Averky (Taushev) was serving as Abbot of Holy Trinity Monastery during 1973, a position he held from 1960 until his death in 1976.

The broader archive includes Mr. Petroff's original résumé, employment records, legal files, correspondence, personnel records, administrative documents, investigative materials, photographs and working papers documenting his professional life and his career with Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).
According to the original résumé preserved within the archive, Petroff's professional background also included service with the U.S. Department of State and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) prior to his management positions with Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty. These statements are presented solely as documented in the original archival materials.
The archive contains substantial material relating to Russian, Soviet, Cold War, émigré and Russian-American subjects, giving this 1973 Russian Orthodox photographic group particularly interesting archival context.
