This imposing piece of twisted wood is almost certainly the famous dead cedar tree at Eagles Nest Bluff in Oregon Illinois. Back in the 1840s the writer Margaret Fuller famously sat under this exact tree to write poetry. The wild part is that the tree was already dead when she sat under it and it somehow remained standing like a stubborn wooden ghost for decades afterward becoming a major local tourist attraction.
