Handmade Quilt Vintage 81 x 87 Offering a vintage Cathedral Window quilt made with a folded muslin or white background and a colorful assortment of scrap fabric patches (such as 1930s dress prints and feedsacks) tucked into folded curved frames.
The Cathedral Window quilt is a famous needlework art piece that dates back to the early 20th century.
Key Characteristics• Three-Dimensional Structure: Unlike regular quilts that are pieced flat, the Cathedral Window design relies on an origami-like folding and pressing technique.
• No Batting Needed: The folded muslin background naturally builds up multiple heavy layers of fabric. This means it requires no traditional batting or backing, which was a huge advantage during the Great Depression when resources were scarce.
• Scrap-Friendly Design: It functions as a classic \"scrap quilt\". The small diamond cutouts allow makers to highlight tiny, mismatched pieces of fabric—such as old dress prints, calicos, and feedsacks—resembling stained glass windows. ..... Nicole is signed in two places on the back corners. there is only one real tiny space that I took a picture of that is a little stain. how about this at and estate sale in it was noted that it was loved very much and kept and clean places for its history. much care in packing for a safe trip. thank you for your offer, Ron. Construction Method
1. Large squares of white or unbleached muslin are cut and precisely folded inward to form a modular network of small pockets.
2. These white squares are stitched together to form the foundational matrix.
3. Small, colorful scrap fabric squares are placed inside the intersecting seams.
4. The biases (folded edges) of the background cloth are rolled or curved over the raw edges of the colorful scraps and secured down with small stitches, framing the fabric inside. Because Cathedral Window quilts are completely hand-folded and hand-stitched over hundreds of hours, they hold a high baseline value among textile collectors.
