Grahame-White Mounts His Biplane, 1911 Harvard-Boston Aero Meet RPPCSquantum Field, Tail Marked "E.W.", Aram Boston, Unused RPPC
DESCRIPTIONThis is an original early 1910s real photo postcard captioned "Grahame-White Ready for a Flight," credited "Copyright by Aram, Boston" with a printed 1911 date in the credit line at lower right. The photograph shows English aviator Claude Grahame-White seated at the controls of his pusher biplane on open ground, flanked by a ground crew positioning the tail skid and wing tips while a small group of onlookers in period suits and boaters looks on from either side. The aircraft's own box-tail assembly, visible at the rear of the machine, carries the painted letters "E.W.", a detail worth noting for anyone researching this specific aircraft or exhibition run. This photograph was taken at the second Harvard-Boston Aero Meet, held August 26 through September 4, 1911, at the Harvard Aviation Field on the Squantum peninsula in Quincy, Massachusetts, the same grounds where Grahame-White had been the star of the first meet the year before. He returned in 1911 to compete again alongside Thomas Sopwith and Earle Ovington, once more winning the event's marquee Boston Light course. Claude Grahame-White was one of the biggest celebrity draws in American aviation exhibition circuits of 1910 and 1911, famous for his London to Manchester night flight and his headline-grabbing landing near the White House in Washington, D.C.This card is unused, with a blank correspondence side. Images were scanned at 600dpi so you can review every detail of the ground crew and tail lettering before you buy.Every effort is made for fact checking and provenance including background research through news and historical archives. Please review the enlarged photos closely for corner and edge wear, light surface creasing, and any small stress lines in the photographic emulsion, which are visible in a couple of spots along the upper right border.Card measures approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches, standard early postcard stock. The printed photograph area, measured inside the white border, runs approximately 3.25 x 5.25 inches.
