No original box. Blade shows fewer scratches from the sheath than is typical on these knives. Original locking sheath is included and functional. Look closely at the photos for edge condition, handle marks, and sheath details. This is a later Gerber-marked example (serial A27746), not one of the early Benchmark-marked first-production pieces.
Description & History
Walter “Blackie” Collins was a well-known knife designer who founded Benchmark Knives in Gastonia, North Carolina in 1978. Gerber purchased Benchmark in 1984. The TAC II was designed by Collins and entered production under Gerber the following year. Early examples from the 1985 first production run typically carry Benchmark by Gerber markings and low A-series serial numbers (often in the A01xxx–A06xxx range) and are the versions that bring the highest prices. Gerber continued the TAC II after the initial Benchmark stock and branding phase, dropping the Benchmark name and using the standard Gerber stamp. Production serials continued in the A + 5-digit format. The model is known for its 13C26 stainless blade, molded Zytel handle with full hidden tang, and the distinctive locking Zytel sheath that secures into the pommel. Blades commonly show scratches from repeated sheath use; examples with cleaner blades are less common.
This TAC II has a black Zytel handle with a lanyard hole and a partially serrated double-edge stainless blade. The blade is marked Gerber and carries the serial A27746. The TAC II logo is etched on the blade. There is no Benchmark marking. The knife includes the original black Zytel locking sheath marked TAC II. No box is present. The serial falls well above the low-A numbers associated with the documented 1985 first-production Benchmark-marked examples, consistent with later Gerber production of the Collins design. The blade shows fewer sheath scratches than is typical for the model.
Gerber TAC II knives are collected for the Blackie Collins design, the locking sheath, and the tactical profile. Early Benchmark-marked first-run pieces command the strongest prices. Later Gerber-marked examples such as this one still hold solid collector and user interest when complete with the original locking sheath, especially when the blade is cleaner than average. The combination of the TAC II model, Collins design, black Zytel handle, serrated blade, serial A27746, and included sheath places this knife within the later Gerber production of the TAC II.
