“having been specially distinguished for faithful services in maintaining the honor, integrity and supremacy of the Government of the United States of America…” Signed by George Cadwalader. Measures 24 x 18.5 in. In Very Good condition for a large 19th-century certificate. Age toning and random spotting to paper. Minor to moderate edge wear including losses along margin and a small paper loss (approximately 1/2 x 3/4 in.) to right lower quadrant and 1.5 in. close tear to upper right edge. Shelved at Rockville Room J (MW Shelf).

The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) was founded in 1865, shortly after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, by Union officers who had served in the American Civil War. Organized initially in Philadelphia, the society sought to preserve the ideals for which the Union fought, commemorate the service and sacrifices of Union officers, and maintain loyalty to the United States during the uncertain years of Reconstruction. Membership was originally limited to commissioned officers of the Union Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, but later expanded to include their descendants as hereditary companions. The order became one of the most prestigious Civil War veteran organizations in the United States, counting prominent members such as Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Philip Sheridan, and it played a major role in preserving Civil War memory through publications, archives, and commemorative activities.George Cadwalader (1806–1879) was an American lawyer, soldier, and federal judge best known for his service as a Union general during the American Civil War. Born into a prominent Philadelphia family, he studied law and established a successful legal career before military service. Cadwalader had earlier served in the Pennsylvania militia and as a volunteer officer in the Mexican–American War, gaining experience that later led to his appointment as a brigadier general of volunteers in 1861. During the Civil War he commanded Union forces in Maryland and played a controversial role in the arrest and detention of civilians suspected of Confederate sympathies, actions connected to the suspension of habeas corpus under Abraham Lincoln. After the war, Cadwalader returned to the law and in 1871 was appointed a judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, a position he held until his death. He remained active in veteran and patriotic organizations, including the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.
