Promoted to Generalfeldmarschall in January 1943, Paulus became the highest-ranking German officer to surrender when his army was encircled and destroyed at Stalingrad, marking a decisive turning point in the war. After capture, he cooperated with Soviet authorities and later testified at the Nuremberg Trials. His legacy remains tied to the catastrophic defeat at Stalingrad.
