General Railway Signal GRS Signal Appliance Catalog 5 Vol Set 1915-56 RailroadScarce five-volume partial set of General Railway Signal Company (GRS) Signal Appliance Catalogs, comprising Volumes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 of the company\'s extensive loose-leaf technical reference system. Volume 5 is not present. Issued by General Railway Signal Company of Rochester, New York, these substantial factory catalogs were designed as working references for railroad signal engineers, with individual sections and plates periodically replaced or supplemented as equipment changed.
The primary catalog index is dated August 1949, while the individual technical plates span a considerably broader period. Examples observed in this set include a June 1915 plate for a high double-arm upper-quadrant train-order signal as well as later material dated January 1956, demonstrating the continually updated nature of these volumes.
The five volumes encompass a remarkable range of railroad signaling technology, including mechanical interlocking machines, mechanically operated signals, switches and derails, relays, housings, resistors, arresters, switchboards, electric interlocking machines, electric signals, transformers, rectifiers, reactor bonds, centralized traffic control equipment and related apparatus. Numerous sections contain detailed technical illustrations, exploded component diagrams, specifications, ordering information and engineering data.
The volumes retain their handsome original dark cloth-covered GRS binders with gilt spine lettering and company emblems. Several retain earlier Electric Signal Appliances / Mechanical Signal Appliances GRS covers internally. Thumb indexes and sectional tabs provide access to the many individual technical sections.
Particularly interesting are the numerous period railroad-office markings, inspection/update stamps, names and ownership labels. One visible label identifies an Assistant Signal Supervisor of the N.Y.C. R.R. at E. 105th St. Station, Cleveland, Ohio, providing excellent regional railroad provenance. Other stamps document the catalogs being checked and maintained as working engineering references.
This was serious professional railroad literature rather than a consumer publication. General Railway Signal catalogs are represented in major institutional collections; the Library of Congress, for example, holds an earlier two-volume GRS signaling catalog under the subject Railroads—Signaling—Block system. Surviving GRS documentation encompasses numerous specialized signal, relay, interlocking and control publications, further illustrating the breadth of the company\'s engineering literature.
An outstanding technical railroadiana archive with particular appeal to signal collectors, railroadhistorians, engineers, restorers and researchers of mid-century railway technology.
