ORVILLE E. BABCOCK (1835-1884) was a General in the Civil War and an aide to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant during and after the war. He was President Grant’s private secretary at the White House. Babcock was criminally indicted twice over corruption charges but Grant shielded him from political attack out of loyalty, drawn from their shared battles during the Civil War.

“Mrs. Grant requests me to write you and say that if not too much fatigued, she will be pleased to have you assist her in receiving this afternoon. If you can come, she desires me to say she hopes you will do so by two o’clock, and lunch with her.
