Flag of the Ministry for State Security (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, MfS), better known as the Stasi, the secret police and intelligence service of the German Democratic Republic. The flag reproduces the ministry’s emblem in full: a raised fist gripping a rifle with fixed bayonet, set against a waving East German flag with the hammer-and-compass state emblem, all inside a white shield bordered with the “MINISTERIUM FÜR STAATSSICHERHEIT” lettering. The shield is centered on a solid red field.
The Stasi was founded in 1950 and modeled on the Soviet KGB, with which it worked closely throughout the Cold War. By the late 1980s it employed roughly 90,000 people and relied on a network of informants numbering well over 100,000, making it one of the most extensive surveillance organizations of the 20th century. Its motto, “Shield and Sword of the Party,” was borrowed from the Soviet security tradition. The ministry was dissolved during the collapse of the GDR in 1989-90, and its records were opened to the public after reunification.
This is a detailed, accurately reproduced emblem, a strong piece for collectors focused on Cold War intelligence history, the East German state apparatus, or the KGB-to-Eastern Bloc security service lineage. It pairs naturally with our GDR NVA and Free German Youth flags for a complete East German set.

Flag Care Instructions
Due to the highly vibrant nature of our flags, some fading may occur in harsh conditions. To keep your flag looking vivid and lasting as long as possible:
- Cleaning: Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals, which can fade the print. Do not machine wash or machine dry. The agitation and heat can damage the fabric and stress the stitched header.
- Drying: Air dry flat or hang to dry, out of direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry.
- Ironing: If needed, iron on low heat, printed side down (or use a pressing cloth), to avoid damaging the design.
- Display (indoor): For best color retention, display away from direct, prolonged sunlight exposure. Indoor UV exposure over time can cause gradual fading, especially with reds and darker colors.
- Display (outdoor): If flying outdoors, bring the flag in during heavy rain, high winds, or storms to prevent tearing. Rotate or replace outdoor-flown flags periodically, as constant sun and weather exposure will fade and wear any flag over time. This is normal for outdoor use, not a manufacturing defect.
- Storage: Store folded or loosely rolled in a cool, dry place. Avoid long-term storage in damp areas to prevent mildew.
Following these steps will help preserve your flag’s color and condition, whether you’re displaying it as a collector’s piece indoors or flying it outdoors.
