GB ROYALTY BUCKINGHAM PALACE MUSIC CONCERT LACE 1868

Lace overlay on paper background for a Royal Concert on Wednesday 20th May 1868. Printed by Ortner and Houle, 3 St. James\'s St. London. The concert was conducted by Mr. Anderson and Mr W.G. Cusins. Mr Cusins was a notable conductor for the Philharmonic Society, established in 1813 \'to promote the performance, in the most perfect manner possible, of the best and most approved instrumental music\'. Initially the concerts were held in the Argyll Rooms; it was likely that the Society was initiated because of John Nash\'s bold urban redesign of Regent Street . It was promoted by Prince Regent George IV to promote classical music as a British institution. The regular concerts were moved from the Argyll Rooms in 1830, when it burnt down, to the Hanover Square Rooms until 1869. The Philharmonic Society reinvigorated British Musical life by inviting foreign composers to London. The 1830\'s saw a fruitful association with Felix Mendelssohn leading the British Premiere of his \'Hebrides Overture\' and to several Commissions including his \'Italian\' Symphony. Mendelssohn conducted the early \'Royal Command \' Performances to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The concert programme is in exceptional condition for a paper item over 150 years old.
