Vintage NOS · Unused · Aogami Steel · Discontinued Set Fujihiro 藤廣 5-Piece Bench Chisel Set
Oire Nomi · Blue Paper Steel · Tsuge Handle · Niigata Japan A rare heirloom-grade set by a master craftsman of Niigata — curated by Ichizo Hamono Honpo ◈ Vintage NOS — Unused · Setup Required Before Use

New Old Stock (NOS) from long-term storage. Technically unused, blades in excellent condition. As with all long-stored stock, minor surface patina on the blades and light aging to the original presentation box may be present. This set will not be restocked. Please review all photos carefully before purchasing.

A rare complete set of Fujihiro (藤廣) bench chisels, hand-forged by a master craftsman in Niigata Prefecture — a region with a deep and distinguished tradition in Japanese blade-making. Each chisel is forged from Blue Paper Steel (Aogami / 青紙鋼), prized among professional woodworkers for its exceptional edge retention, toughness, and capacity to take a razor-sharp finish. The handles are turned from Japanese Boxwood (Tsuge / 椿材), a dense premium hardwood celebrated for its fine-grained texture and warm yellow tone — among the most refined handle materials in traditional Japanese toolmaking. This five-piece set has been discontinued and is no longer in production, making it a significant find on the current market.

Condition Details New Old Stock — Please Check All Photos

Originally unused stock (New Old Stock / NOS), listed as \"Used\" for transparency due to signs of long-term storage (e.g., minor patina on the blades). The original five-piece presentation box shows light cosmetic aging consistent with decades of storage; the chisels themselves remain unused. This is a one-of-a-kind set with no restock available. Please review all photos carefully to judge the condition for yourself.

Setup Required Important — Not Ready to Use Out of the Box

Like all traditional Japanese bench chisels, each chisel in this set requires initial setup before professional use:

  • Hoop Seating (Katsura-uchi): The metal ferrule on each handle must be properly seated before first use to prevent splitting under mallet work.
  • Initial Sharpening: Each blade requires sharpening and back preparation (ura-dashi / ura-oshi) before use. The backs must be lapped flat on a whetstone.
  • Carbon Steel Care: Aogami is high-carbon steel and will rust if left damp. Wipe dry after each use and apply a light coat of oil before storage.
  • Experience Recommended: These tools are intended for users familiar with the setup and maintenance of traditional Japanese woodworking chisels.
Safety & Use Notice
  • 01 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Always wear eye protection. Flying chips and wood debris can cause serious injury.
    • Consider cut-resistant gloves and hearing protection depending on the work environment.
  • 02 Correct Use / Misuse
    • Chisels are cutting tools. Always keep hands behind the cutting edge.
    • Do not use as a pry bar, wedge, or screwdriver. Do not strike the blade with a metal hammer.
    • Secure your workpiece firmly. Always cut away from your body.
  • 03 Hammer / Mallet Guidance Use an appropriate Japanese or wooden mallet. Striking with excessive force or with an unsuitable hammer risks cracking the Tsuge handle or dislodging the hoop. Inspect all handles before each use session.
  • 04 Carbon Steel Care Blue Paper Steel (Aogami) is high-carbon steel with no rust resistance. Wipe all blades dry immediately after use. Apply a light coat of camellia oil or similar before storage. Never leave in contact with moisture or acidic materials.
  • 05 Steel Information Steel type is based on expert wholesaler information at the time of purchase. Official mill certification is not included with this item.
  • 06 Box / Packaging The original five-piece presentation box is included. Cosmetic aging of the box is normal for long-stored NOS stock and does not affect the tools in any way.
  • 07 Warranty / Liability Sold AS IS / WITH ALL FAULTS to the extent permitted by law. User assumes all risks of use, setup, sharpening, and maintenance.
