A vintage 4.5x2.75" original vintage photograph FDDM&S electric rail engine 362 with a rail car in back with number 72 and little sign that says Fort Dodge Boone and something else. Nice detail! Please see my other vintage historical photographs. online info -The Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Railroad (FDDM&S) was incorporated on February 16, 1906, and became Iowa's longest electrified interurban railway. Its 85-mile mainline connected Des Moines, Boone, and Fort Dodge, moving crucial coal and gypsum shipments alongside passenger traffic across central Iowa. History and Operations - The Fort Dodge Line: Spanning an 85-mile primary mainline (and up to 147 total route miles including branches), it served as a primary transportation backbone for farming and mining communities.
- Electrification: It was one of the early prominent examples of converting/electrifying a standard steam railroad line in the United States.
- Decline & Closure: Passenger trolley services ended in September 1955, and the line transitioned to freight-only operations before being acquired by the Chicago and North Western Railway in 1968 and later abandoned.
- Surviving Legacy: An 11-mile segment of the historic route near Boone continues operation today via the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad.
