PRINCIPIADISCORDIA
"Fnord", "Hail Eris!" and theSacred Chao 3 Magnet Set
Three 1.25" flat magnets: Fnord, the word that will berevealed when you see through the illusions of The Conspiracy; HailEris!, a cry to the Goddess of Discord; and the Sacred Chao. Allthree are from the novel Principia Discordia.
ThePrincipia Discordia is a Discordian religious text written in 1963 by Malaclypse the Younger, with Kerry Wendell Thornley (Lord OmarKhayyam Ravenhurst). The title, literally meaning "DiscordantPrinciples", is in keeping with the tendency of Latin to preferhypotactic grammatical arrangements. In English, one would expect thetitle to be "Principles of Discordance."
ThePrincipia describes the Discordian Society and its Goddess Eris, aswell as the basics of the POEE denomination of Discordianism. Whilethe Principia is full of literal contradictions and unusual humor, itcontains several passages which propose that there is serious intentbehind the work, for example a message scrawled on page 00075: "Ifyou think the PRINCIPIA is just a ha-ha, then go read it again."
ThePrincipia is quoted extensively in and shares many themes with thescience fiction book The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Shea andRobert Anton Wilson. Wilson was not directly involved in writing thePrincipia.
Notablesymbols in the book include the Apple of Discord, the pentagon, andthe "Sacred Chao", which resembles the Taijitu of Taoism, but the two principles depicted are "Hodge" and "Podge"rather than yin and yang, and they are represented by the apple andthe pentagon, and not by dots. Saints identified include EmperorNorton, Yossarian, Don Quixote, and Bokonon. The Principia alsointroduces the mysterious word fnord, later popularized in TheIlluminatus! Trilogy; the trilogy itself is mentioned in theafterword to the Loompanics edition, and in the various introductionsto the fifth editions.
Discordianismis a religion and subsequent philosophy based on the veneration orworship of the Eris Discordia, the Goddess of chaos, or archetypes orideals associated with her. It was founded after the 1963 publicationof its holy book, the Principia Discordia, written by Greg Hill withKerry Wendell Thornley, the two working under the pseudonymsMalaclypse the Younger and Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst.
Thereligion has been likened to Zen based on similarities with absurdistinterpretations of the Rinzai school, as well as Taoist philosophy.Discordianism is centered on the idea that both order and disorderare illusions imposed on the universe by the human nervous system, and that neither of these illusions of apparent order and disorder isany more accurate or objectively true than the other.
Thereis literally no metallic object that cannot be improved by adding one or more of these magnets.
