Description
This specimen consists of a dramatic arrangement of large fluororichterite crystals set within igneous vein calcite, forming an overall isosceles triangular shape that measures approximately 9 × 8 × 8 cm on its faces. The geometry gives the specimen a strong natural display orientation, with the apex defined by calcite cleavage.
Across approximately 70% of the base, a single prominent lath of fluororichterite is exposed, measuring roughly 2.5 × 7 cm. At an acute angle to this is a second large fluororichterite lath, approximately 2.5 × 8 cm in size. This second crystal is partially embedded at its core within cream-colored calcite, emphasizing the crystal–matrix relationship. Several additional smaller, partial fluororichterite laths are also visible embedded within the calcite matrix.
The fluororichterite crystals are mottled black and display well-developed prismatic cleavage faces that are distinctly reflective under good lighting, giving the crystals a semi-metallic to vitreous sheen.
The calcite matrix is igneous vein calcite and shows dramatic rhombohedral cleavage, with the bulk of the calcite forming the upper portion and sharp point of the triangular specimen. This cleavage geometry contrasts strongly with the elongated amphibole laths.
Also present are five isolated platy crystals of phlogopite, measuring approximately 5–10 mm, located in the lower left portion of the triangular face. These bright, reflective mica plates add a subtle secondary sparkle and are consistent with the Wilberforce assemblage.
Overall, the specimen presents a bold, architectural composition, with large crystal size, strong cleavage, and clear mineralogical relationships.
Geologic and Mineral Context
Wilberforce, Ontario is a classic locality for fluororichterite occurring in calcite-rich veins within alkaline igneous environments. Fluororichterite from this area is notable for forming very large, lath-shaped crystals embedded in calcite, often accompanied by phlogopite. Specimens that preserve multiple large amphibole laths in a coherent, displayable geometry, such as this example, are especially valued as both reference and cabinet pieces.
