I'm pleased to offer this attractive specimen of Fluorite on granite from the Felix mine, Azusa, Los Angeles County, California. The specimen measures 3.62 x 2.17 x 2.31 inches or 9.19 x 5.50 x 5.87cm and is in excellent condition.
This was recently donated to the Pinal Geology and Mineral Museum in Coolidge, Arizona by Ron Gibbs (rongibbsite) of Oro Valley, Arizona.Ron has been exceptionally generous in his donations of books, specimens, and time and his involvement in the PGMM is greatly appreciated.I've been tasked with offering excess specimens, etc. from the museum here on and your purchase will directly benefit the only geology museum in Pinal County!
TheFelix mine has long been popular with California collectors and its location within a huge population base made it a popular collecting spot before it was largely closed off due to urban sprawl. The mine has been known for its fluorite specimens since at least 1892 when W.H. Adams, Jr. donated a specimen to the California State Mining Bureau. While most specimens are only so-so, a concerted specimen mining effort in the early 1990s by brothers Dana and Ken Gochenour of southern California. They brought to market some truly remarkable specimens of a rich green color and wonderful cuboctahedral crystal habit. The best of these are surely the finest California specimens in existence and rank well against most other US localities.
This piece shows a decomposed granite largely covered with beautiful green crystals to over an inch. These are frosted and fluoresce a beautiful purple color under both longwave and shortwave UV light with the best response being under longwave UV light. The specimen sits well for display and is a decent size for the locality.
I don't often come across these on the market and, when I do, they are usually thumbnails or small groups and are prohibitively expensive. I see far lesser specimens on for $200, $300, $800, and one that is nearly $5000 but is admittedly a superior piece to this one! Wow...some crazy prices.
Thanks for your purchase--it will directly benefit the Pinal Geology and Mineral Museum!
