Fine Belgian-Style Tape Lace Runner 42\"x18\" Hand-Worked Floral Medallions.
Offered is an exceptionally intricate Belgian-style tape lace table runner/centerpiece, measuring approximately 42 inches long x 18 inches wide.
The centerpiece features three large elongated floral/geometric medallions, surrounded by multiple bands of delicate openwork, repeated rosette motifs, and an elaborate continuous scalloped border.
The lace has an especially interesting mixed construction. The fine woven lace tape forms the principal outlines and decorative motifs, while the open spaces and numerous junctions appear to incorporate substantial handworked needle-lace and joining work. The close-up photographs show the irregularity and individual character of the handwork particularly well.
The design is strongly reminiscent of the Belgian and Bruges flower-lace tradition, although I have not represented this piece as authenticated Bruges bobbin lace. The tape itself appears to be a regularly woven manufactured lace tape rather than tape individually bobbin-made by hand.
The extraordinary amount of detailed handwork makes this a particularly attractive piece for a collector of Belgian lace, European textiles, vintage linens, needle lace, Battenberg/tape lace, or historic table linens.
