An Original US Army Order, written at Head Quarters 3rd Infantry, Fort Smith, Aug 20, 1840 announces Major Belknap has Ordered that Lt William S Henry , Adjutant of the Post assigns Captain O (Otis) Wheeler, Lt (Josiah H) Vose, & Lt William H Gordon, all officers with the 3d US Infantry as a Board of Survey to assemble at this Post, & examine a shipment of uniforms and equipment just received from Major Fassoux, for issue to the 3rd Infantry, w details of the Survey findings; The Survey Board having inspected the shipment finds 32 pairs of Sergeant\'s Overall are missing, and were not packed. 1p 8 x 11\" ink on lined paper, with age spots, Overall VG. This is one of the earlier items I have seen for Fort Smth.
