FDR Franklin Roosevelt 1901 Harvard Crimson Bound Volume Presidential History

Today for sale we have a genuine piece of American presidential history, a large leather bound volume of The Harvard Crimson from the academic year 1901 to 1902, printed while a young Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a student at Harvard and serving on the staff of the paper. Turn to the masthead and the name F. D. Roosevelt '04 is printed among the editors, three decades before he entered the White House as the thirty second President of the United States. This is not a reproduction or a later account of his student years. This is the printed record itself, produced in Cambridge while Roosevelt was climbing the ranks of the Crimson toward the presidency of the paper he would hold before graduating in 1904.
The volume is stamped in gilt on the spine reading Harvard Crimson, 40, 1901 to 1902, and gathers the complete daily run for the year in a single heavy book.
The Roosevelt connection is only the beginning of the presidential thread running through these pages. The very first issue, dated Tuesday, September 24, 1901, opens with a note that football practice was suspended on account of the day of mourning for the late President McKinley, assassinated only days before and succeeded by Theodore Roosevelt. A volume that begins in the shadow of one presidential assassination and carries the name of a future president on its masthead is an unusually rich survivor from the American century as the century opened.
The masthead is a roll call of men who went on to national prominence. Alongside Roosevelt sits J. C. Grew, later Joseph Grew, United States Ambassador to Japan at the time of Pearl Harbor and a central figure in wartime diplomacy. R. J. Bulkley '02 served as Managing Editor and later as a United States Senator from Ohio. W. R. Bowie '04 was Secretary and became a nationally known clergyman and author. L. B. Wehle appears among the senior editors and later worked in New Deal Washington under the very man whose name shares this page. P. W. Thomson '02 served as President, with J. Foster Jr. '02 as Business Manager and C. H. Derby '03 assisting.
Beyond the presidential and diplomatic names, the run captures Harvard life at the turn of the century in extraordinary detail. The opening issue carries the full eleven game football schedule including Columbia, West Point, the Carlisle Indian School, Dartmouth, and Yale at Cambridge, along with coverage of the Harvard and Yale versus Oxford and Cambridge international track meet at Berkeley Oval. The October 22, 1901 issue leads with a large halftone photograph of the Yale campus arranged for the Yale Bicentennial exercises, with dispatches on the dedication of the Ives Cheney Memorial Gateway and President Eliot responding for the universities of the East. Throughout are halftone photographs of Harvard teams and campus scenes, accounts of football, baseball, crew, track, and tennis, lists of honorary degree recipients including Hugo Munsterberg and Theobald Smith, reports on the new Semitic Museum and Stillman Infirmary, faculty notices, and the daily business of the college.
The advertising is a period document in its own right. Pages carry the Harvard Desk from Paine Furniture Company of Boston at seventeen dollars and fifty cents, Leavitt and Pierce tobacconists of Harvard Square, Pach and Notman Photographic Company as official class photographers, Cotrell and Leonard of Albany, makers of caps and gowns, Vartray Ginger Ale, the Boston and Albany Railroad and the Fall River Line, Holophane glass shades on electric lights, the Dunster Cafe, Bartlett's College Pharmacy, Max Keezer, the Harvard Bookstore, and a long parade of Harvard Square and Boston tailors, hatters, caterers, jewelers, and outfitters, along with student classifieds for typewriting, rooms to let, and secondhand textbooks and far more local business endeavors.
The binding is half leather over marbled paper boards with leather corners and raised bands to the spine. Condition is good and solid for a volume of this size and age. The leather is scuffed and rubbed with chipping and loss along the joints and at the head and tail of the spine, and the corners show some wear. The boards are firmly attached and the text block is sound and tight. The newsprint is toned as expected but supple and clean throughout, with the photographs printing well and the type crisp.
A scarce historical piece for serious collectors of Franklin D. Roosevelt, presidential and White House history, political Americana, Harvard University, early college journalism, turn of the century football and Ivy League athletics, or period advertising.
