A genuinely special piece from Denmark\'s Golden Age of pipe making.
This Knute of Denmark freehand was made by Karl Erik Ottendahl — one of Copenhagen\'s [Aalborg\'s] most celebrated pipe makers, whose signed and house-brand work commands real collector attention alongside names like Larsen, Former, and Bang. Knute was one of Ottendahl\'s export house names, and while Pipedia designates it as a secondary line to his main Karl Erik signature, restorers and collectors consistently note individual Knute pieces that rival his top-tier work in grain and character — this one is a great example of exactly that. The \"Crowned K\" stamp in white on the vulcanite stem is the recognized hallmark of Karl Erik-made Knute pipes.
Dating to the 1970s — the heart of the Danish freehand movement — this pipe wears its era with distinction. The dual plateau treatment is rare: natural craggy plateau surfaces appear on both the rim and the heel, flanking smooth briar panels that display exceptional straight grain and flame grain, with bird\'s-eye on the bowl face. The golden walnut contrasting stain deepens the visual drama considerably.
Unlike many Danish freehands that run oversized, this pipe is proportioned for real-world use — 6 inches overall, comfortable as a clench pipe, with a chamber diameter that suits a wide range of tobacco blends.
Condition: Carefully restored estate pipe. Chamber lightly smoked and uniform. Vulcanite stem cleaned and polished. Plateau surfaces cleaned and preserved. Briar wax buffed to a warm luster.
Dimensions: Overall length 6\" | Bowl height 2-3/16\" | Bowl width 1-5/8\" | Chamber depth 1-5/16\" | Chamber diameter 7/8\"
