The holiday in celebration of the dead, Día de Los Muertos, has been practiced by Mesoamerican cultures for 3,000 years. It is difficult to put into words the importance of this holiday in Mexico. Each year on the first days of November, graves are ornamented with decorative skulls, marigolds, candied pumpkin, tamales, pan de muerto, toys, catrinas, mescal, and more.Our pieces were created in the states of Puebla, Michoacan, Guanajuato, and Jalisco, where the Day of the Dead has been celebrated for as long as history demonstrates its existence.
The joy the artists take in designing and producing their work shows in the vibrant complexity of each art piece. They are brightly colored and skillfully crafted works of art. This one of a kind piece was created by Geovanni Mercado. I will include a photo of him holding a different example of his talent. This lovely lady was almost completed when an accident occurred breaking a corner of her skirt. (see photos) The artist himself repaired the break. I was thrilled that he was willing to still sell it, rather than destroy it. I felt there was too much time and effort dedicated to her creation to have it lost in that instant. Normally - these sculptures can easily go for over $250.00.
