Inc., Providence, RI 1904 - c.1920From the Maine Historical Society Website: The Wadsworth-Longfellow House was built in 1785–1786 for General Peleg Wadsworth and Elizabeth Bartlett, maternal grandparents of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Henry's younger sister Anne Longfellow Pierce was the last person to live in the house. Widowed at an early age, Mrs. Pierce lived in the home until her death in 1901. Desiring to preserve it as a memorial to her famous brother and their family, she bequeathed the house and property to Maine Historical Society.
The Wadsworth-Longfellow House is an important New England architectural artifact. It is the oldest standing brick structure on the Portland peninsula, and the only single-family residence to survive downtown Congress Street’s change from a mixed commercial and residential neighborhood on the edge of town to an urban business district. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962, the House was meticulously restored by Maine Historical Society in 2002 to its mid-nineteenth century character.
