DESCRIPTION
Dark blue transferware.A fine pair of early American historical Staffordshire pottery, comprising a handleless cup and shallow bowl, both decorated in dark cobalt-blue transfer print with the rare “Washington Standing at His Tomb, Scroll in Hand” subject. The full-length figure stands beside the urn-topped Washington memorial holding a scroll, surrounded by an elaborate floral and foliate border. The base of the cup repeats the Washington memorial.
Made by Enoch Wood & Sons, Burslem, Staffordshire, England, for the American market, circa 1825–1830. The pattern belongs to the remarkable group of patriotic Staffordshire wares produced in connection with the enormous American enthusiasm surrounding the Marquis de Lafayette\'s 1824–25 return visit to the United States.
CONDITION
Overall very good. No chips, repairs or cracks. One small glaze flake to the right of the figure\'s head that appears to have been created at the firing. Light, almost invisible craquelure throughout (all visible in the images). A FINE EARLY PATRIOTIC COMMEMORATIVE CUP AND BOWL.
