This is the other side and end of the emergency dam described in view 21726. The operator\'s house and the pivot on which the bridge swings are at the far end. In order to form the dam, the bridge is first put into position by swinging the end nearest the spectator across the lock until it arrives at the opposite wall of the lock and rests upon it. The wicket girders now seen projecting from the lowest extremity of the bridge, hinged within the bridge, and suspended at their outward extremity on steel ropes are, let down to a vertical position. When lowered they extend at regular intervals across the width of the lock, thus forming runways and supports for metal gates which can be let down to close up the spaces between the wicket girders. The gates are nine feet square, resembling flat cars. Each car runs on two rails which are, of course, the narrow sides of the girders.
