Antique Japanese Walnut Wood Carving
Kannon Bosatsu
Compassion Buddha
Circa: Edo Period, 18 century and earlier
H 18" (44cm.), W 5.75" (14.5cm.), D 5" (12.5cm.)
Condition: age crack on pedestal, o.a. very good

This centuries-old wood Kannon is dramatic in quaint and provincial form. Noticeably carved with few tools akin to the Ittobori style (一刀彫), with arduously carved finer details that achieved an effect of serenity in the Goddess's facial features, and the crown bearing a small geometric symbol of Amitabha, of whom Kannon is an emanation. The Compassion Bodhisattva is standing on an elevated lotus pedestal. She appears placid in a courteous mien, with her right hand held forth in a wisdom-bestowing gesture, while the left has the vase of life-renewing nectar. Despite the darkened surface, her smooth facial features and chest revealed an underlying reddish walnut wood tone (Oni-Kurumi 鬼胡桃), showing a beautiful patina that accentuates the Buddha's essence sanctified from centuries of incense smoke in the statue. With an age crack on the pedestal, the figure remains solid and in good condition, and her life-like embodiment is untarnished. We conservatively attribute the statue to the early Edo of the 18th century and likely earlier.
