Earliest Witnesses to the Gospel!Matthew · Mark · Luke · John𝔓104 · 𝔓137 · 𝔓138 · 𝔓52
We are excited to introduce this distinctive new collection from Sacred Text Replicas—a rare opportunity to bring together four carefully handcrafted manuscript facsimiles representing earliest witnesses to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John!
• Matthew — 𝔓104: A 2nd century Greek fragment and one of the earliest surviving manuscripts of the Gospel of Matthew. The recto preserves part of the Parable of the Wicked Tenants in Matthew 21:34–37. Preserves only faint traces on the verso. These include Matthew 21:43 and likely 21:45, Jesus speaks of the kingdom being given to those who bear its fruit and the religious leaders realize His parable concerns them.
• Mark — 𝔓137: The earliest known surviving manuscript of the Gospel of Mark (late 2nd/early 3rd cent). The recto preserves portions of Mark 1:7–8, “I baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Preserves portions of Mark 1:16–18 on the verso, recounting Jesus’ calling of Simon Peter and his brother Andrew beside the Sea of Galilee, including His invitation to follow Him and become “fishers of men.”
• Luke — 𝔓138: A 3rd century Greek fragment of the Gospel of Luke. The recto preserves portions of Luke 13:13–17, recounting Jesus healing a woman on the Sabbath and His response to those who objected.Preserves portions of Luke 13:25–30 on the verso, including Jesus’ warning of those shut outside the kingdom and concluding that “some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”
• John — 𝔓52: An early 2nd century fragment, widely regarded as the earliest surviving New Testament manuscript. The recto preserves John 18:31–33, Pilate’s question to Jesus: “Are you the King of the Jews?”Each Sacred Text Replica begins with careful research and close study of the surviving ancient manuscript. Preserves portions of John 18:37–38 on the verso, including Jesus’ declaration that He came into the world to bear witness to the truth and those of the truth hear His voice. It concludes with Pilate’s famous question, “What is truth?”
The manuscript image is reproduced on premium Egyptian papyrus, reflecting the material of the original. The papyrus fibers are carefully cut and worked to recreate the irregular edges, lacunae, holes, and other signs of deterioration visible in the surviving manuscript. Because this finishing is performed individually rather than by automated cutting, subtle variations occur naturally, making each completed replica unique.
The collection is presented in an 10x13-inch floating display between two panes of glass, with your choice of a white or black MDF frame. Each replica is carefully secured to the glass using acid-free, archival-quality mounting tissue, allowing you to view both the recto (front) and verso (back).
Your collection includes four laminated information cards, one for each manuscript which provides historical context and inviting you to share the remarkable story of sacred Scripture’s preservation.
