Denton Cooley, MD wasa renowned American cardiothoracic surgeon known for his pioneering work incardiovascular surgery. Born on August 22, 1920, in Houston, Texas, Cooleygraduated from the University of Texas at Austin and later from Johns HopkinsUniversity School of Medicine in 1944. He served as a surgical registrar withRussell Brock at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and joined the facultyof Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1951.

Cooley is best knownfor performing the first successful human heart transplant in the United Statesin 1968 and for being the first surgeon to implant a total artificial heart ina human in 1969. He also developed many of today’s commonly used cardiovascularprocedures and devices. In 1962, he founded the Texas Heart Institute, where heserved as surgeon-in-chief for over 40 years.

Throughout hiscareer, Cooley received numerous honors and awards, including the NationalMedal of Freedom in 1984 and the National Medal of Technology in 1998. He wasalso a member or honorary member of over 50 professional societies worldwideand received decorations from 12 foreign countries.
