A classic Dartmouth College captain's chair by Nichols & Stone of Gardner, Massachusetts, a Windsor chair maker established in 1857. It’s exceptionally well-constructed of solid maple wood.
The crest rail has a hand-applied gold rendering of Dartmouth Hall flanked by "17" and "69," the year the college was founded. Gold pinstriping runs along the seat, the turned bamboo-style spindles and legs, and the stretchers.
The frame has a black lacquer finish and the scrolled arms are finished in contrasting cherry. It has a sculpted solid wood saddle seat, a comb back with seven spindles, and an H-stretcher base.
It still has the original Nichols & Stone paper label underneath, hand-inscribed "D7-5 Black Old Dartmouth." The N&S shield brand is also stamped into the underside, reading "Nichols & Stone Co., Gardner, MA."
