Dan Style Mask on Stand Liberia Ivory Coast African Art Red Yellow Tribal Decor For Sale

A bold, expressive miniature mask in the style of the Dan people of Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. It shows the hallmark Dan vertical ridge running down the center of the forehead, here detailed as a twisted, rope-like band in yellow, along with wide, round, open eyes, a strong nose, and full, slightly parted lips.

The face is finished in a deep red-brown with darker shading and a hand-worked, slightly textured surface. Vivid yellow eyes with black pupils and yellow lips give it a lively, watchful presence. A rugged, sculpted coiffure in rose, black, and moss-green rises above the brow, and segmented braided sidelocks in yellow and black frame each side of the face. The mask is mounted on a slim black metal rod and rectangular black base for easy shelf or tabletop display.

About the Dan tradition: Among the Dan, masks are seen as embodiments of forest spirits who take human form to guide, entertain, and keep order in the community. Their refined faces, often with a central forehead ridge and wide eyes, rank among the most recognizable forms in West African art. Please note: This piece is offered as a decorative art object in the Dan style. It is not represented as an antique or as a ceremonially used mask, and no provenance is claimed.
