Daniel Boone was hired to blaze a trail to the West beginning in SW Virginia through the Cumberland Gap, a mountain pass first used by wildlife, Native Americans and later settlers moving west.. His trail became known as the Wilderness Road as it led settlers through the wild forests of Kentucky. Today the Cumberland Gap is preserved in a National Historical Park outside Ewing, VA.
