Spanish American War General Maximo Gomez Bronze.
Historical Artifact Spanish American War ,The Bronze of General Maximo Gomez ( Dominican/Cuban General ) has been in my collection for over 19 years, I acquired it and 2 letters by the hand of the General while he was on campaign during the revolution against the Spanish. The letters went to a very good friend in Key West some years ago, I kept the Bronze. It came over from Havana through a collector/dealer over 18 years ago when it was a bit easier to transport art from Cuba. I do know from my years working with antiquities that this is a rare and important bronze, It is a period piece being from the late 1800s and was created by a very talented artist, no novice student created this, I looked into Remington, who was in Cuba then and met General Gomez ( from my research) . I can not state that it is a Remington but the finish of this bronze is incredible. There are inscriptions on the base, on the right side there is a signature ( unreadable and the word HAVANA , I can make out) on the left side of the base the inscription reads ( El Ultimo Libertador e America), Stands 13’’ tall , 12’’ long , 18.75 lbs
I recommend if you have interest in this bronze, is to contact any Cuban Historian and share the photos with them. They will drool on it. Its very special piece of Cuban History, Also google, Maximo Gomez and look at the statue in Havana, could be the model for the larger one. Its very heavy for its size and in perfect condition.
