Cowgirl on Horse with Cattle & Dog Mountain Ranch Western RPPC c1910Description:
An outstanding early real photo postcard depicting a young woman on horseback at a rustic mountain ranch, surrounded by cattle, a farm dog, split-rail fencing, and a magnificent backdrop of pine-covered mountains. A wonderfully evocative scene of ranch life in the American West, dating to approximately 1905–1918.
The young woman, dressed in a broad-brimmed hat, dark fitted jacket, and long light-colored riding skirt, sits on a large, dark horse facing the camera. Beside her stand several cattle, including a prominently spotted black-and-white animal, while a small dog watches from the left. Rough wooden corrals, fallen timber, and weathered ranch fencing provide fascinating details of the working environment.
The mountainous setting is especially appealing, with tall conifers, rugged forested slopes, and a distant ridgeline suggesting a high-country ranch or homestead somewhere in the mountainous western United States. The precise location is unidentified. The composition appears to be a personal snapshot rather than a commercially produced view, capturing an authentic moment of rural life during the early automobile era, when horses remained essential to ranch work and transportation.
The photograph has a white border with a small handwritten notation, apparently“R.G.”, along the upper margin. The unused divided back carries anAZO photographic-paper stamp box with four upward-pointing triangles, generally associated with the 1904–1918 period, consistent with the woman\'s clothing and the photographic presentation.
A particularly desirable subject combining an early Western horsewoman, cattle ranching, a ranch dog, period women\'s riding attire, rustic fencing, and an impressive mountain landscape. Strong appeal for collectors of cowgirl imagery, horses, Western Americana, ranching history, pioneer homesteads, and early vernacular photography.
