The reverse shows Mary Magdalen receiving communion from Jesus with the inscription "Souvenir de la St Baume".French tradition says that Mary Magdalen left the holy land and lived on the sight where the church now known as "Sainte Baume" was built in the 13th century.
Mary Magdalene is known in the Bible as the woman who reformed her life when she began to follow Jesus. She is associated with the woman from whom Jesus cast out seven demons and who washed his feet with her tears and dried them with her long hair in thanksgiving for forgiveness of her sins. She was with the virgin Mary at the foot of the cross when Jesus was crucified. She went back to his tomb on the following Sunday and was one of the first to see the risen Christ. She is typically shown in art as a woman with long hair holding a jar of perfume or a skull while deep in contemplation.
