Warring States agate is a type of agate from China, named after the ancient Chinese Warring States period (475–221 BC). It is known for its vibrant, banded, and often swirling colors, especially shades of red, yellow, and orange. Although named for the historical period, modern stones sold under this name are often just named for their resemblance to ancient artifacts and are sourced from Hebei, China.
Due to mining restrictions in China, no more agate is being mined at this location. All specimens are old stock specimens.
Composition: Agate is a form of chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of quartz. The fine-grained nature of the crystals makes it look non-crystalline, but in thin slices, the fibrous structure can be visible.
Hardness: Agate is relatively hard, scoring a 7 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.
