Beautifully carved wooden horsehead bookends, attributed to Watty Chiltoskie, but unsigned. Lead weighted, which is his method. Approx meaurements: 6.75" high, 5" wide, 2 3/8" deep. A few superficial scuffs, one small ear chip, and a nick in one mane. See photos. Nice satiny finish showing the natural grain of wood, likely walnut. The pair is carved in mirror image, with the manes flowing in opposite directions. Watty Chiltoskie (1897-1973) of Cherokee, NC, started carving as a young man with a kitchen knife, then a pocket knife. As adults, his younger brother, Goingback Chiltoskie, also a carver, gave him a set of professional carving tools. He is known for horsehead and mulehead lead-weighted bookends.
