Carrie A. Nation Temperance Movement Hatchet Pin-1905-Mother-of-Pearl & Saphiret For Sale

A rare collectible! Temperance (later known as Prohibition) reformer Carry (also spelled “Carrie”) used a hatchet to destroy a Wichita, Kansas, saloon in 1900. Her bar room smashing became known as “hatchetations”. A Topeka, Kansas, druggist supplied Nation with little pewter hatchets to sell to cover all of her legal fines and travel expenses. The public wanted more, so these little pins were created. This particular one was a higher-end piece—created of copper-cased brass, mother-of-pearl, and a Saphiret rhinestone. It measures approximately 2” x 1” and is in excellent condition. The exact version of this lovely piece of history is on display at Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
