The Black United Front(BUF)also known as The Black United Front of Nova Scotia, was a Canadian radical black nationalist political groupbased in Halifax, during the Civil Rights Movement. Theywerepreceded by the Nova Scotia Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NSAACP). Unlike the NSAACP however, BUF was far more vocal in its demands for racial equality in Canada. BUF was inspired by the AmericanBlack Panther Party (BPP)who helped organize BUF along the Panthers Maoist paramilitary structure. Stokely Carmichael, Prime Minister of the Panthers,went to Nova Scotia to assist in the groups early formation. Because of the strong ties between the two groups, BUF was considered to be the Canadian chapter of the BPP. Racism was something that many white Canadians in the 1960s like to believe wasa phenomenathat only happened in the United States. BUF shattered those misconceptions with their militancy and determination. Led by Rocky Jones,BUF worked actively within the black community to spotlight racism that AfricanCanadians suffered. They did not shy away from politically sensitive issues and were the first group to demand reparationfor the victims of Africville.It was said that BUF,\"Shook up whites in Canada\".
