Description & History
Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) was founded in 1994 in Tualatin, Oregon, by Rod Bremer and Paul Gillespie, both former Kershaw employees. The company built its reputation on collaborations with custom makers and bringing those designs into production at accessible prices. Early success came with the Ed Halligan K.I.S.S. series, followed by the Kit Carson M16 line that became one of CRKT’s signature models.
Kit Carson was a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant who began making knives seriously in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He designed the M16 series for CRKT around 1999. The design introduced the Carson flipper (which also serves as a finger guard when open) and helped popularize the flipper opener in production knives. Carson was inducted into the Cutlery Hall of Fame in 2012 and passed away in 2014. The M16 series remains one of his best-known production designs.
The M16-14DSFG is the tan Special Forces variant of the large M16. It features a tan coated blade with partial serrations, tan G10 scales, dual flippers, liner lock with AutoLAWKS safety, and a four-position pocket clip. These desert-tan versions were offered for use in lighter environments. Still sealed in the original box.
