1902 This is a collection of 18 sheets from a volume titled “The Social Comedy,” published in 1902 by the old humor magazine Life. All of them feature artwork by famed artist Charles Dana Gibson, one of America\'s most popular illustrators ever. They appeared originally in a smaller size in the weekly magazine between 1898-1900.The pages measure 9 x 11.5 inches, printed on a glossy, light cardstock of paper. Some have slight dampstaining along their edges, but this minor discoloration doesn\'t affect any of the images, and overall the group is generally in excellent condition. The pages have separate illustrations on their reverse side which were drawn by other artists whose work also appeared in the magazine. See the accompanying photos to get an exact idea of each of the Gibson illustrations\' appearance.Each page bears the heading of “The Social Comedy,” and their subject matter reflects that flavor. Many poke fun at the foibles of the upper class, or romance and courtship in high society. A lot of the cartoons poke fun at high society, or the humors of courtship among young ladies and gentlemen. Gibson was most famous for his creation of “The Gibson Girl,” and some of these comic drawings feature examples of this very recognizable type of young lady.All the prints include captions, such as dialogues like this between two of Gibson\'s characters in the cartoon:“You don\'t mean to say they are engaged! Isn\'t there a great difference in their ages?”
“Yes; about two hundred thousand dollars.”And, one showing a domineering wife, with a title of, “A CONTINUOUS PERFORMANCE.”: She: “It tells here of a man in Chicago who hasn\'t spoken to his wife in fifteen years.”
