A true collector\'s grail: all four issues of the original Sword of Azrael limited series, each graded CGC 9.8 (Near Mint/Mint), all signed by artist Joe Quesada and authenticated as CGC Signature Series, with consecutive CGC certification numbers (2754729009–2754729012) — these four books were submitted, signed, and slabbed together and have remained together as a matched set ever since. A sequential SS set at this grade, from the artist of the character\'s first appearance, is a rare find — and the population numbers back that up: issues #2 and #4 have only 4 copies each graded CGC 9.8 SS, and #3 has just 5. Issue #1 is more available at 37, but still a scarce signature slab overall.
Why this run matters: Issue #1 features the first appearance of Azrael (Jean-Paul Valley), written by Dennis O\'Neil with art by Joe Quesada and Kevin Nowlan. Quesada\'s pencils defined the character\'s early visual identity — owning his signature on the full 4-issue origin run is about as complete a piece of this character\'s history as you can assemble.
