Up for sale is a vintage Barling pipe dating to the early 1960s, from the transition period when the company was still producing very well-made pipes with much of the old Barling character still intact.
This example has the classic look that makes Barling pipes so appealing: elegant shaping, solid English workmanship, and a feel in hand that reminds you why the name still carries weight with collectors and smokers alike. The pipe presents very well and has the kind of honest, understated style that older English pipes do better than just about anyone.
Condition is very good overall. The bowl, shank, and stem all show nicely, and the pipe has been well cared for. It remains a fine example of an early transition-era Barling and would make a great addition to a collection or a very satisfying pipe to put back into regular rotation.
Barling pipes from this period occupy a nice place in the market. They still offer much of the traditional craftsmanship associated with the family era pipes, while often being more affordable and easier to find. For anyone who enjoys vintage English briars, this is a handsome and worthwhile piece.
