Handwritten and signed 8" x13" financial document dated Boston 1795. The document is a financial account and promissory receipt between prominent and historic Boston figures John Callahan and John Stoughton. The account notes among other items passage for John Stoughton and child from London along with half the servant's maids passage.
John Callahan was a very prominent American Ship Captain and maritime Master. He was heavily employed as a ship captain by wealthy Boston merchants including John Hancock. Because of his elite routes between London and Boston he frequently chartered passages for high profile figures including John and Abigal Adams.
John Stoughton was often referred to as Don Juan Stoughton. He was officially appointed by the Spanish Crown to serve as Consul in Boston in 1795 the exact year this receipt was written. He held that influential post for 25 years until his death in 1820. Stoughton was a highly prominent and wealthy figure in Boston and was instrumental in establishing the first Roman Catholic cathedral there.
This 18th century document looks very good overall but shows typical signs of age and handling including a few small edge tears, a small dog-ear in the upper right corner and a clean partial separation on the center fold (approx. 2"). The ink still retains a bold appearance.
