The artwork by Tony Theobaldshowsfour Hawker Hurricanes flying in formation during the Summer of 1940, the aircraft shown were flown bythe Commanding OfficerHogan, Ken MacKenzie, \'Ginger\' Lacey and Ken Lee, all of whom became fighter aces during WWII. Along side theAir Force Cross medal is shown full size. The cover bears Montserrat $1.50 Enemy in Sight Hurricane stamp cancelled on the first day of issue 22 May 2000. The cover has been flown in Hurricane LF 363 of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight over Kenley at the unveiling of the Kenley Tribute.This cover has been hand signed by Oberleutnant Gerhard Schopfel KC, who flew with JG 26 flying Messerschmidt Bf 109s during theBattle of Britain.Official extra special, numbered and certfied on reverse.
Oberleutnant Gerhard Schopfel KC
Schopfel joined the Luftwaffe from the Police Force in 1937, and served with l./JG 51 before joining 9/JG 26 as a Staffelkapitan. One of the most successful German fighter pilots during 1940, scoring 27 victories. He scored his first victory on the 19 May 1940 in France, then during the Battle of Britain he enjoyed numerous successes including 4 Hurricanes of No 501 Squadron on 18 August 1940. Became Kommandeur III/JG 26 on 21 August 1940. He was awarded the Knight\'s Cross on 11 September 1940. From 6 December 1941 to 10 January 1943 Kommodore JG26 as Galland\'s successor. Total of 700 missions, 40 victories in the West.
