This is a lovely bone china figurine from Royal Doulton, named Autumn, showing a woman sweeping fall leaves with her dress and apron flapping in the wind. She is wearing a red dress with an apron, in a bonnet tied around her brown hair. The movement in her dress and apron in the wind is so realistic! And she is holding that broom, made the way they used to make brooms a century or so ago. Her face is hand painted so beautifully with her brown eyes, pink lips, and faintly pink chips. A real piece of art!
The backstamp shows this piece was made in England with this pattern copyrighted in 1951 by Royal Doulton, famous for their bone china tea ware and their beautiful figurines, like this one. Her Royal Doulton HN number is 2087. HN is for Harry Nixon who was head of the Royal Doulton painting department and joined Doulton in 1900.
Margaret (Peggy) Davis designed this figurine for Royal Doulton and she was made in England, she was made for just a few years, from 1952 to 1959, just after the WWII years, when English workers and fuel all went to the war effort, not decorating beautiful china like this figurine! In 1928, Royal Doulton started a date coding system, where a small number printed to the right of the lion, added to 1927, gave the year the item was made. They phased that out around 1958, and this figurine does not have a floating number, so it was must have been made in either 1958 or 1959. Notice that HN2087 is handpainted in green, with the artist’s initials of EC.
Royal Doulton figurines are still being made today, but in 2004, production of Royal Doulton figurines was moved from England to a factory in Thailand.
Autumn is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or crazing and is ready to be admired and displayed in your china cabinet or on a shelf or your mantle!
She stands about 7 & 1/2 inches tall, and is 3 & 1/2 inches wide at the base and weighs 14 ounces.
