BODY OF STEIN:
Fine porcelain body features a hand-tinted transfer of the famous Lion of Luzern/Lucerne Lion. The "Lion of Lucerne is a sculpture of a lion carved out of a rock wall by Lukas Ahorn. It was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen in the early 1800's to commemorate the Swiss Guards that were killed during the French Revolution in 1792. The monument and this depiction bear the words "HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI", which translate as "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss". The dying lion has a broken spear protruding from his side while resting on broken spears surrounding the Swiss battle shield.
The front top above the Lion are the words: Lowe Von Luzern (Lion of Luzern)
PEWTER LID:
The ornate pewter lid is extremely rare and beautiful! It features a pewter vine relief in the shape of a LION’s face on the front! The vines making up his beautiful mane with his piercing eyes and an open mouth. The top features a classic acorn finial. The handle thumblift is just as striking in the same pewter relief leaf design. The inside of the pewter lid is lighter in color which indicates its authenticity as it is less exposed to air that ages the pewter design. This is highly desirable in these Beer Steins.
The porcelain handle features a painted leaf design going down the length of the handle. Around the pewter lid are the engraved words/lettering:
“Tlj. Schild r/L. M. Miller frdl. Grinnerung 5.5.9.3.” Next to the Lid handle are: “½. L.” (Best to our translation) This may have been a personal engraving.
LITHOPHANE
The Lithophane bottom is depicting a man and a woman enjoying a glass of wine sitting at a kitchen table. This is also slightly visible from the bottom as well. (See photo taken from bottom view)
Approximate measurements:
- Height: 9 1/2" tall
- Width: 5 1/2 " wide with handle
- Rim Width: 3 ¼” (Rim to rim)
- Base Width: 4” Diameter
Over All Condition:
This has been part of a large Lion of Luzern estate collection and in the family for over 70 years! It has been kept inside a glass case on display only. In excellent over-all condition commemorates with it’s age. There is a tiny firing mark or age crack mark on the bottom, but not on the inside of the stein. HISTORICAL INFORMATION
THE LION OF LUCERNE/LUZERN
"The dying Lion of Lucerne/Luzern" is one of the world's most famous monuments. It was hewn out of natural rock in memory of the heroic death of the 700 Swiss mercenaries at the Tuileries in 1792. Carved in deep relief into the sandstone cliff above the town. Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1884) created the sculpture as an allegorical reference and to memorialize the bravery of the hundreds of mercenarySwiss Guards that were killed protecting King Louis XVI and Marie-Antionettefrom the French locals, whostormed their Tuileries castle, in Paris, during the French Revolution in 1792. The monument was dedicated in 1821. Today the statue is a major attraction in Lucerne. The sad eyes and poignant expression on the dying lion's face is almost hypnotizing. During a visit to Lucerne, American writer Mark Twain described the Lion of Luzern as ‘The saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world.’
GRAND TOUR
*The Grand Tour was an upper-class European travel itinerary that flourished from about 1660 until the arrival of mass rail transit in the 1840s. The Grand Tour served as an educational rite of passage for males of the British nobility and wealthy gentry, whose address among their entourage made "Milord" a French and Italian byword for any British gentlemen. The primary value of the Grand Tour lay in the exposure both to the cultural artifacts of antiquity and the Renaissance and to the aristocratic and fashionable society of the European continent. A grand tour could last from several months to several years. It was commonly undertaken in the company of a knowledgeable guide.*
